ELECTRIC BUSES ON MERSEYSIDE

GENERAL HISTORY OF OPERATIONS

The recent experiments with Electric Buses on Merseyside can fall into three distinct phases, in the late 1990’s, Merseytravel Funded an experiment with ‘ECO FRENDLEY’ vehicles on new contracts the, first to start was in Birkenhead in 1998 with a circular service using small vehicles based on Milk float technology, the second which falls outside the scope of this essay was in 1999 with four vehicle powered by LPG working Park & Ride services in Southport, other Eco friendly routes have been started but with low emission diesel vehicles, The third, starting in 2002, was in St. Helens using larger vehicles of the same type as in Birkenhead, with the most recent being in Liverpool started in 2005, using hybrid diesel electric vehicles based on the Optaire Solo bus.

Birkenhead The six Gulivar Technobus vehicles seat 9 and are rather basic and have a low top speed with the route starting at Woodside they struggle with the hill on Chester Road to gain the town center, the route is rather torturous and the last section between Hamilton Sq. and Woodside can give a swift ride even causing the overspeed alarm to sound. Unfortunately these vehicles have spent a lot of time unserviceable to the extent that all were taken out of service in 2002/3 and replaced with conventional Mercedes Minibuses although they are all back in service now

St. Helens The six vehicles seat 11 and are just a larger version of the Birkenhead machines but with a odd seating layout, the offside emergency door is a door rather than a jacknife door as at Birkenhead, the lack of power is not as evident on these as at Birkenhead, although the top speed is not great. There have been problems with these machines which spent some time off the road, being replaced with odd metro riders, though thay were not off for as long as the Birkenhead machines.

Liverpool The most recent uses six Hybrid Diesel electric powered Optaire Solo M850’s seating 28 operated by arrive from their Bootle Depot, again a tortures route although they do pass along some very busy thoroughfares and can hold their own in traffic, the vehicle can run on Batteries only or with the motor running to give additional power they are rather noisy outside when the motor is running , inside there is less noise than a conventional Solo, although there is a static hum most of the time when running on Batteries the operation is almost silent, there are problems with these vehicles with a output of five most visits have seen only two or three out, with at least one short Neoplan working the service, in fact on of these vehicles is Branded for the service anyway. As a matter of interest the short neoplan’s were allocated to Southport one year and worked alongside the gas powered Dart’s on the Park & Ride services.

What of the future ?, with Mersytram looking more unlikely, will Mersytravel be looking at Trolleybuses ?, The LPG powered Dart’s at Southport have all been converted to conventional fuel in 2005, will the Gulliver’s be replaced by better battery buses ?, we shall just have to wait and see.
